"I'll never forget how scent and experience combined to form an indelible memory. It goes back to when I was a senior in high school and it was graduation day, so I was filled with a mixture of emotions, of loss, of change, of excitement and joy. At the conclusion of the evening commencement ceremony, as I was heading towards the family car which was parked several blocks from the school, I took a short cut through the front yard of a girl I had dated, passing by a tree that was in bloom. I couldn't make out any details of the tree in the dark of the night, but was aware of a heady scent, sweet and powerful. As things go, it passed out of my mind rather quickly amid the swirl of the start of summer and a pending new life in college.
A couple of years later, while home for summer vacation, this oddly familiar scent wafted through the open windows of my parent's dining room. I followed the path of the rich scent out the back door and into the yard, walking up to a tree covered with tiny yellow blossoms. I stood underneath it with my head enveloped completely in its rich perfume, while my mind launched into a replay of that night. Details I wasn't even aware I had absorbed at the time came back to me with such force I could almost feel the give of the grass under my feet as I cut through the yard. The details of that warm summer night came alive in my mind, the silhouettes of the houses and cars forming a backdrop for the emotional drama of the night.
Only as I have gotten older has the memory started to lose some of its power, but every year in late May when the Russian Olive trees come into bloom I think of that day."
